Microscopy Australia showcases the power of NCRIS in parliamentary visit

Microscopy Australia recently welcomed The Hon Julian Hill MP and Dilhan Simsek to the University of Sydney, showcasing how NCRIS‑enabled national research infrastructure is driving discovery, industry innovation and sovereign capability.

Hosted by Microscopy Australia CEO Lisa Yen, the visit highlighted the critical role of NCRIS investment in sustaining both advanced infrastructure and the highly specialised expertise required to operate it.

Joined by DVCR Prof. Mike Ryan and PVC (Research Infrastructure) Prof. Simon Ringer, the group explored the atomic‑scale imaging capabilities at Sydney Microscopy and Microanalysis that allow researchers to probe materials with extraordinary precision. These insights are transforming research in advanced materials, nanotechnology, clean energy, semiconductors and biomedical science, fields central to Australia’s future industries.

A visit to the co‑located, NCRIS‑supported Australian National Fabrication Facility cleanrooms further demonstrated how co‑located capabilities connect characterisation, fabrication and translation – accelerating the pathway from discovery to application.

Together, these facilities show how sustained national investment enables Australia to convert scientific capability into real‑world outcomes: supporting innovation, strengthening industry and building long‑term resilience.

The visit reinforced the essential role of NCRIS in underpinning both infrastructure and the expert staff who make it accessible, with Microscopy Australia’s platform scientists Magnus Garbrecht, Jiangtao Qu, Takanori Sato and Leigh Stephenson demonstrating these capabilities.
