Microscopy Australia Access Scheme

Accelerating innovation by improving access to advanced microscopes and expertise, across the country.

The Microscopy Australia Access Scheme further subsidises access to advanced microscopy and microanalysis facilities across the Microscopy Australia network to enable innovation and reduce barriers to access.

The scheme supports researchers who need specialised capabilities not available locally, as well as industry users seeking to access new techniques, expertise or facilities to accelerate innovation and product development.

It provides up to $20,000 with matching funds per application to reduce facility access fees, making advanced microscopy and microanalysis more affordable.

Whether you are advancing a research project, exploring a new analytical technique, developing a commercial product, or tackling a complex technical challenge, the Access Scheme can help connect you with the expertise and infrastructure you need.

Who can apply?

The scheme is open to Australian-based researchers and industry users, including those from:

  • Universities
  • Medical research institutes
  • Publicly funded research agencies
  • Hospitals
  • Government departments
  • Philanthropic organisations
  • Commercial entities and businesses

Industry applicants from start-ups, spin-outs and SMEs are particularly encouraged to apply, as well as researchers who are early career, based in regional and remote locations, or require access to specialist capabilities not available locally.

What support is available?

Successful applicants receive a subsidy that is applied directly to facility access costs.

The scheme offers:

  • Up to $20,000 with matching funds per application
  • Access to a range of facilities across the Microscopy Australia network
  • In-person or remote (fee-for-service) access options
  • Specialist scientific expertise and technical support

Before applying

Before submitting an application, applicants must:

  • Identify the facility and capability best suited to their project.
  • Discuss their project and intention to apply with the relevant scientific contact.
  • Obtain a price estimate or quotation from the facility to support project costings.

See the application guidelines for more details.
