Masterclass: Expansion Microscopy

17 - 19 Mar 2026 Microbial Imaging Facility, University of Technology Sydney

Join us for a three-day Expansion Microscopy Masterclass combining theory and practical hands-on sessions, led by experts in this rapidly advancing technique.

The workshop will be supported by Canada Bioimaging, Microscopy Australia and CZI, in collaboration with Advanced BioImaging Facility (ABIF), Hugh Green Technology Centre and Microscopy New Zealand. The masterclass will be hosted by the Microbial Imaging Facility (MIF), at The University of Technology Sydney.

Many biological investigations require 3D imaging of cells or tissues with nanoscale spatial resolution. Expansion microscopy is a chemical process that allows preserved biological specimens to be physically expanded in an isotropic fashion. This enables nanoscale imaging of biological specimens using conventional microscopes, de-crowds biomolecules to support signal amplification and multiplexed readout chemistries, and makes specimens transparent.

The masterclass is designed to build skills in an advanced microscopy technique, with a focus on biological science applications. The course aims to upskill facility staff in sample preparation and image acquisition for a range of applications such as cells and tissues. There will be specific applications demonstrated throughout the workshop, but there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and interact with experts in the field.
