Weir create cutting edge alloys

Weir Minerals employs nearly 7,000 people worldwide, delivering end-to-end solutions for mining, dewatering, transportation, milling, processing and waste management activities.

Through an ARC Linkage Project, Weir Minerals have accessed sophisticated microscopy with Microscopy Australia at the University of Sydney. They have worked with researchers to develop new super-tough alloys to keep their mining machinery at the leading edge of the market.

The aim is to make improved and highly wear-resistant metal matrix composite alloys to extend service life and reduce downtime due to replacement and repair of equipment parts in the world’s most demanding machine environments. A/Prof. Cairney’s expertise in advanced microscopy at Microscopy Australia helped Weir Minerals Australia continue to improve their world-leading equipment.
