The event offered a deep dive into Indigenous sciences including bush medicine, basket weaving, fibre dyeing, tool making, and navigating songlines using the stars. Attendees learned how knowledge has been passed down for thousands of years via dance and astronomy, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of many Indigenous nations in NSW.
Our UNSW experts Dr Simon Hager and Dr Karen Privat brought a scanning electron microscope which, along with an optical microscope, allowed participants to explore many exciting samples from ants and feathers to rocks and plants. Some of these came from other activities on the day such as a native indigo plant and the acrylic fibres that had been dyed with it.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the National Indigenous Science Education Program and Macquarie University for hosting this enriching event, and the City of Sydney Council and Inspiring NSW for supporting it. Special appreciation goes to Prof. Richard Tilley, director of the Electron Microscope Unit at MWAC, UNSW, for his support in making it possible to bring a scanning electron microscope into the community.
