The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) has bestowed its highest honour on one of the AMMRF’s major users. Prof. Tony Weiss, from the University of Sydney, has been recently inducted into its College of Fellows.
Prof. Weiss holds a chair in Biochemistry and Molecular Biotechnology and was elected by the full membership of the AIMBE into the official College of Fellows Class of 2013, for recognising tropoelastin’s translational potential, and implementing its immense value for biomedical engineering, especially in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Confocal and electron microscopy in the AMMRF at the University of Sydney play a major role in his group’s research into elastin biomaterials and their commercialisation. These materials enable us to replace damaged blood vessels, repair the heart and fix damaged skin.
The fellowship acknowledges Prof. Weiss’s research and international leadership in this area. He is the only Australian to have been inducted into this prestigious fellowship.
