Calix Ltd has developed a low emissions technology for processing carbonate minerals, particularly magnesite (magnesium carbonate), to magnesia (magnesium oxide). Their scientists asked the AMMRF at the University of Sydney to examine the structure of magnesite from their South Australian mine and the processed material from their pilot plant in Victoria. Among other findings the data revealed nano-crystalline magnesia and suggested to Calix that this processed product could have anti-microbial properties. As a direct result of this work the company is now bringing a range of new anti-microbial and water treatment products to the market.
