A new advanced microscopy facility at the University of Adelaideâs Waite campus has been launched by the Federal Minister for Science and Research, Senator Don Farrell.
Senator Farrell said the Waite Facility of Adelaide Microscopy would improve researchersâ experimental timeframes and improve research outcomes in this hub of agricultural and environmental sciences.
â?By 2050, global demand for food is expected to increase by 70 per cent from its 2007 value,â? Senator Farrell said. â?Currently, Australia contributes directly to the diets of about 60 million people, less than 1 per cent of the world population and less than 2 per cent of Asiaâs population. Australiaâs advanced agricultural knowledge base is our most valuable asset to support food security in our region and the world and the outcomes of this knowledge indirectly nourish up to 400 million worldwide.â?
University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor Professor Warren Bebbington said the University of Adelaide is growing its research capacity at the Waite dramatically.
â?Our researchers are tackling the global challenges of food security and sustainable food production for healthier outcomes. Facilities like the Adelaide Microscopy centre at Waite will help to ensure we deliver faster research outcomes through new and stronger partnerships.â?
Minister Farrell said the Waite Facility has received more than $1.4 million in Australian Government funding for the project, which represents a significant expansion of the AMMRF node in South Australia. The full text from the Ministerâs office is here.
